Residential - One-off housing

Russell House

18a Boclair Crescent, Bearsden, Glasgow G61

Russell House is a contemporary take on a Victorian villa, built with natural blond sandstone and classic copper. Standing at the end of a cul-de-sac in the Old Bearsden Outstanding Conservation Area, the house is flooded with light due to the tall vertical windows. The interior features a double height living room with a study above and is finished in American alder.

Drummond House

18a Boclair Crescent, Bearsden, Glasgow G61

The heart of this house is the south-facing courtyard, which is surrounded by an arcade on three sides. The arcade is constructed from twin oak columns and beams and is detached from the triple-glazed glass walls, which trap the sun’s heat. The inside walls and floor of the arcade are finished in natural blond sandstone while the roof is hand-finished in classic copper.

Gibbons House

2 Grange Avenue, Bearsden, Glasgow G62

We built a natural stone wall around the site to continue the established plot pattern of the Milngavie Outstanding Conservation Area. The wings of the house are angled to create an entrance space to the street and a sheltered external seating area in the south facing garden. Internally, the two wings are linked with a bridge lit from above with roof lights. The bridge separates the parents’ and children’s bedrooms.

McLean and Newbury Houses

Whitelodge, Bearsden, Glasgow G61

Russell and Bryce Architects and their sister company designed, developed and built two houses at Whitelodge in the Old Bearsden Outstanding Conservation Area. The houses sit between a John MacDonald art deco house inspired by the 1927 Weissenhof Exhibition in Germany. The houses have classic copper roofs, American alder joinery finishes, Bulthaup kitchens and C.P. Hart bathrooms.

McGillivray House

St Edmunds Grove, Milngavie, Glasgow G62

The Treetops house sits on the edge of a steep slope. From the road, it is a modest single-storey house, with living spaces at the upper levels and bedrooms on two floors below. Balconies surround each floor, giving superb views over the tree canopy and of the landscaped gardens. The client requested a ‘Wow’ house on this steeply sloping site and this was our response.

Clayton House

161 Mugdock Road, Milngavie, Glasgow G62

The new house is linked by an arcade to the retained original coach house, creating an entrance courtyard. The house is crafted to reflect the character of the Milngavie Conservation Area with a steeply sloping natural slate roof with dormer windows.

Three New Houses

2 Manse Road Gardens, Bearsden, Glasgow G61

Two of the original Victorian villas in Manse Road had gardens that extended 150 metres south to the Manse burn. The new site was created from these neglected gardens with access from an existing lane. The three houses are each 5,000 square feet and extend over three levels. Boundary walls are finished in Caithness granite and the roofs are either natural slate or classic copper. The houses have double-height halls and their interiors are flooded with daylight from the vast corner windows.

Grosset House

1a Grange Road, Bearsden, Glasgow G61

This comprehensive remodelling and extension of a 1970s house gives it the scale and grandeur to blend in with the Victorian villas of the Old Bearsden Outstanding Conservation Area. The extension raises the original house to street level and an external bridge leads to the front door, with internal bridges connecting the extension to the original. The house is finished in natural blond sandstone, classic copper and slate. A south-facing roof terrace overlooks the Manse burn.

Pullar House

Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire

The Pullar House fits snugly into the existing street and is designed for retirement with a ground-floor bedroom and additional guest bedrooms on the first floor. The house is built in high-quality materials, including natural stone and Rosemary clay tiles.

Morris House

Earlsferry, Fyfe

Morris House is a house for art lovers in the Fife seaside town of Earlsferry.    The street façade and original cottage have been restored as period pieces while the rear extension is flooded with natural light from full-height windows and numerous roof lights.

Country House

Near Strathblane, Strilingshire

The country house and stud farm was granted planning permission at appeal. The reported said" Despite the size of the house, its different elements have been broken up very succesfully to create impressions of rambling group of buildings. The house should offer observers a succession of aggreeable surpirises from one elevation to the next. This reserved matters application is an inspirational response to the site and its setting. "

Mcgilivray House

Grange Road, Bearsden

When we were appointed architects there was a 1930’s bungalow on the large south facing and steep sloping site in centre of the Old Bearsden outstanding Conservation Area. The challenge was to design a new house that would enhance the Area. The new house is designed over three levels; as a conventional two story house on the upper entrance level with a lower level opening directly onto the large garden.

The house is designed in wings that are predominantly built in natural stone under a natural slate roof with our trademark classic copper gable ends. The material are highly durable, maturing as they age and with an almost endless life.

The house is highly insulated, benefiting from natural solar gain and achieving very low annual running costs.

However the real masterstroke is not that the house does blend into the street and neighbourhood but the Clients addition of a superb stainless steel slide linking the external ground floor deck to the garden below.

Clark House

Kings park Avenue

In Glasgow’s extensive and stylish South Side the Clark House was a typical Victorian stone built semi-detached house with high ceilings and a conventional ground floor layout.  Our remodelling was intended to make the house suitable for the couples “third age” so they can continue to live in the house indefinitely. This has been achieved by retaining the period features in the entrance hall and formal living room but extending and adapting the rear of the house to provide a free flowing kitchen and informal living space both with direct access to the garden. There is a separate formal dining room next to the kitchen, which can become a generous ground floor bedroom. A new cloakroom with shower ensures that the house can become a bungalow in the future.

The rear of the house is flooded with natural daylight while the original natural stone external walls have become a stunning internal feature.

9 Greenhead Road

The site is on the corner of Greenhead Road and West Chapelton Crescent, on the edge of the Old Bearsden Conservation Area.

We demolished a tired 1930’s bungalow and designed a new house that, with its quality of design, streetscape and natural high quality materials, extend the Conservation Area.

The new house sits snugly beside the remaining bungalows demonstrating how Bearsden may evolve in the 21 century. The evolution provides high ceilings, generous, open plan living with direct access to a south west facing garden. There are four bedrooms with generous storage and three bathrooms. The spacious contemporary kitchen and separate utility spaces complete the formula.

Very high standards of thermal insulation, including triple glazing and Photo Voltaic panels generating electricity, ensure that annual running costs will be modest.

As important the stylish external materials of natural stone, slate and classic copper will mature as they age. We have retained the mature trees and hedges that continue to enhance the site.
