JBG - Jobs and business glasgow (formerly Glasgow Development Agency) commissioned the conference centre and offices next to the grade-B listed library in Saracen Street to raise the quality of the area. The natural stone colonnade with huge picture windows to the main street reflect the history of the area. The conference centre and offices are protected from traffic noise by triple-glazed windows whose floor-to-ceiling heights - along with the absence of columns - create a feeling of spaciousness.

The offices are so appealing that we moved in. The level of thermal insulation is so good that we have never had the heating on.

The challenge of this remodelling project was to keep the existing four-storey residential building above in operation. The semi-circular floor plan created challenges in planning a 25-seat meeting room and training suite. The design creates a huge rectangular room within the semi-circular footprint. This involved major structural challenge to remove a column within

the existing offices, which supported all four floors. The conference centre is finished in oak panelling.

ng homes’ existing headquarters have been extended and refurbished to increase staff numbers by 40 per cent. There are welcoming reception and waiting areas as well as generous private waiting rooms. New skylights bring daylight and natural ventilation into the deep plan and increase the sense of space.

Externally, the natural stone and branding reflect the ambitions of the housing association for the area they serve.
